Geography of Russian (俄罗斯族)

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are home to China’s ethnic Russians, who first moved to the country from Tsarist Russia in the 19th century. In the early 20th century, some settled in Xinjiang, with still more after the 1917 Revolution.

They kept most of their Russian traditions: the language, clothing and customs are almost exactly the same as their counterparts in Russia and most are Christians of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Prior to 1949, town-dwelling Russians were employed in transport, repairs, animal husbandry, bee-keeping, horticulture and handicrafts. Villages consisted of around ten families in rural areas and they worked on reclaimed land on the Ili and Tekes riverbanks.

Modern Times of Russian (俄罗斯族)

Nowadays, Russians who live in urban areas of China are mainly working in medicine, industry, trade, finance and transport. Its small population still manages to have deputies to both the regional People’s Congress and the National People’s Congress.
